Happy Retirement, Matt Niskanen!

(Caps Outsider)

Former Caps defenseman Matt Niskanen, who the Caps traded to the Flyers last season, announced his retirement Monday, though he has one year left in his contract with Philadelphia. This news was quite shocking because he’s walking away from hockey at age 33 and would’ve been owed $5.75 next season.

Niskanen often spoke to the media after games and never held back, saying what was on his mind and answering questions bluntly.

“I don’t see many of them,” he said of Caps fans back in February. “I don’t have an online presence so I don’t connect that way, but I run into Caps fans now and then, and yeah, usually that’s the first thing that comes up. The 18′ playoffs and the Cup run, so that’s pretty cool.”

We here at Caps Outsider want to wish Niskanen the best of luck with his future endeavors, and thank him for his time in Washington, especially for helping to bring us the Stanley Cup.
