Boone!
Three games into the season, the only new Washington Capitals player to score a goal was Alex Tuch, and he did it three times.
On Friday, in Game 4, two more Caps added their names to the list, as defenseman Timothy Liljegren and forward Boone Jenner scored in the second period to put the Caps up, 2-1, against the Rangers at Capital One Arena. Tom Wilson added an empty-netter for the 3-1 win.
“It was a hard-fought game, not a lot of room on either side,” head coach Spencer Carbery said, happy with the win but acknowledging the trench-warfare-type atmosphere. “I don’t think either team was clean.”
While it’s still early in the season, the Caps have several players who are expected to be key offensive contributors who have yet to score. Ilya and Aliaksei Protas, Dylan Strome, Jordan Kyrou, and… Alex Ovechkin haven’t found the net, despite the Caps’ early-season success. The five of them, combined, had 95 goals last season (including little Pro’s first and only career goal). Hopefully, this is a big nothingburger, but I wouldn’t have put money on Liljegren having more goals that those five combined, only four games in.
“Timothy Liljegren,” Carbery said, “the goal aside, moving pucks well, gaps are great, moving so well, and gets rewarded for it, as well.”
