Ovechkin Nearing Caps All-Time Goals Record

Ovi only has one Honest Abe award this year. (via the Caps)

Of all the team records that Alex Ovechkin has been breaking lately, there’s one he wasn’t previously on pace to break this season until his recent goal-scoring binge in the past month. Though he is already the Caps’ all-time leading point producer, all-time power play goal scorer, all-time game-winning goal scorer, and all-time shots-on-goal leader, he still isn’t the Caps’ all-time goal scorer.

Yes, that sounds weird, but Peter Bondra still holds that mark with 472, to Ovechkin’s 459. After Tuesday’s goal, his league-leading 37th of the season, Ovechkin only needs 14 more to pass Bondra. With 24 games left, all Ovechkin needs to do is keep up his goal-scoring pace for the season and he’ll break Bondra’s record with his 51st of the year.

Then again, Ovi has scored 21 goals in his last 23 games, and doesn’t appear to be slowing down, so perhaps that record will come sooner than Game 82 on the year.

(Ovechkin also has the opportunity to be the Caps’ all-time assist leader, briefly, unless Nicklas Backstrom passes him.)
