Alex Ovechkin Gets 7,000th Career Shot on Net

With five shots on the Colorado Avalanche on Monday, Alex Ovechkin just hit a new milestone  – 7,000 career shots on net.

He didn’t score on any of the shots in the Caps’ 5-2 loss, but he’s still the first player to reach that 7,000, which is first place all time. Second place is longtime defenseman Ray Bourque, who had 6,209 shots on net.

Oddly enough, Ovi doesn’t have the record for most shots in a season. That goes to Phil Esposito, who had 550 in 1970-71. Ovi, however, is in second and third place for most shots in a season, with 528 in 2008-09 and 446 in 2007-08.

The numbers don’t count Ovi’s shots that missed the net. According to the NHL, Ovi is the all-time leader in in that, too, with most going wide. He’s got 3,088 total, though the league only started counting shots not on net since 2005-2006. Even still, second place on that list is Jeff Carter, who has 1,592. This means that in his 1,541 games, Ovi has attempted 10,088 shots.

Marc-André Fleury has faced the most Ovi shots – 241. Then comes Henrik Lundqvist at 214, and Cam Ward with 204.
