The Fake Hanson Brothers, and Other Fun at Craig Laughlin’s 6th Annual ‘Swing for a Cure’ Charity Golf Tournament
The Laughlin Family Foundation, which raises money to help fight rare cancers, hosted its sixth annual celebrity golf tournament Monday. Participants included the one and only Craig Laughlin, his Monumental Sports colleagues Joe Beninati, Tarik el-Bashir, Alan May and Alexa Landestoy, and many Caps, alumni and coaches: Pierre-Luc Dubois, Matt Roy, Vincent Deshanais, Karl Alzner, Devante Smith-Pelly, Ken Sabourin, Spencer Carbery, Brett Leonhardt, game-day personalities Wes Johnson, Bob McDonald and Caleb Green. Elliot Siegel of the Elliot in the Morning radio show on DC101 attended and provided laughs during the live auction, where participants bid on items such as framed autographs of Alex Ovechkin and Jack Hughes, and various game tickets, dinners with Laughlin and Beninati, and golf and whisky outings.
Ted Leonsis, the Caps owner, made his first appearance at the event, along with his son, Zach Leonsis, who is President of Media & New Enterprises for Monumental Sports & Entertainment. They were in a foursome with former Redskins linebacker Ken Harvey and ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian. Other folks who played included former NFL player John Booty, former Terp and WNBA player Marissa Coleman, former Flyers enforcer Dave Brown, and Pat Sajak was hanging around.
The all-day event at Crofton Country Club featured plenty of laughs, drinks, a contests, and bogies, but most importantly added tens of thousands of dollars to help fight rare cancers.
I was stationed with the Old Fat Bald Guys hockey club, where they had members dressed as the Hanson brothers from the movie Slapshot. The club arrived in a limo, and the guys wearing the Hanson costumes had full jerseys and wigs on all day, in the heat. However, we had an open bar, a whisky sampling station, and plenty of Paul Bissonnette’s Pink Whitney.
The Laughlin Family Foundation began in 2018 after Laughlin’s wife, Linda, was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. In the past few years, they’ve raised funds with Laughlin-branded beers, wine, vodka, and whiskey.
