Celebrating Alex Ovechkin’s 30th Career Hat Trick

(Caps Outsider)

Even if Alex Ovechkin didn’t score three times on Saturday against Montreal, the Caps still would have easily won the game. So scoring the fourth, sixth, and ninth goals in the Caps’ 9-2 win was a New Years Eve treat for a sold out crowd at Capital One Arena.

It was his 30th career hat trick, and also his second of the month. He now has 26 goals on the season and has 806 in his career. Oddly enough, in the past two weeks, he’s tied with Erik Gustafsson for the team lead in goals with six.

Ovi is only the sixth player in NHL history to have 30 or more hat tricks, as he trails Wayne Gretzky (50), Mario Lemieux (40), Mike Bossy (39), Brett Hull (33) and Phil Esposito (32).

Fans through hats after Ovi’s hat trick.
