Capitals Fall to Avalanche

Alex Ovechkin Extends Goal Streak to Six Games

Despite overcoming an early 2-0 deficit, the Capitals just weren’t enough for a strong Colorado Avalanche team that left Capital One Arena with a 6-3 victory.

This was the second game in three days where the Caps hosted a Western Conference opponent, as they previously lost to the Vancouver Canucks 3-2 in OT on Super Bowl Sunday.

Despite the loss, Alex Ovechkin extended his goal-scoring streak to six games, as he scored on a third period power play. Ovechkin’s late goal was a one-timer from the left circle, earning him his 14th goal of the season and the 836th of his career.

Early on, Colorado struck first with two tallies from Ross Colton and Devon Toews, both within five minutes.

However, the Caps then came to life with the help of Beck Malenstyn and Connor McMichael, giving the team back-to-back goals to tie the game at 2-2 in the opening period.

But then the Avalanche broke the tie with two more goals from Artturi Lehkonen and Mikko Rantanen. Lehkonen also scored an empty netter.

Despite the Ovi tally cutting the deficit to 4-3 in the third, Colorado went on two score two empty-netters in the final minute.

Washington now falls to 23-21-8 on the season, remaining in sixth place in the Metropolitan Division.
