Caps Fight Cancer

2019 Hockey Fights Cancer (Caps Outsider)

The Washington Capitals will participate in the National Hockey League’s Hockey Fights Cancer Campaign when they host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Sunday, November 14.  Hockey Fights Cancer is an initiative founded in 1998 by the NHL and the National Hockey League Players’ Association to raise cancer awareness.  This year the Caps will be teaming up with the NHL and Fortune 500 science, engineering and technology leader Leidos for the annual fundraiser.  Proceeds will benefit Flashes of Hope, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Mid-Atlantic Region, Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic, and the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.  Leidos will also present Monumental Sports & Entertainment a check for $40,000 to support auction beneficiaries.

During warm-ups, Caps players will wear one-of-a-kind lavender jerseys that will be auctioned off for charity.  The coaching staff and broadcast crew will also wear lavender apparel to support Hockey Fights Cancer.  In addition, the Caps will host very special quests impacted by cancer in a suite at the game.  The event will also feature many inspirational Hockey Fights Cancer related moments, tributes and stories.

Fans will have the opportunity to join in the spirit of giving by participating in a variety of ways:

-All fans in attendance will receive a lavender  ‘I Fight For’ Rally towel courtesy of Leidos.  They can write the name of a cancer victim they are fighting for on their towel.  Stations will be set up on the concourse for fans to fill out their towels.

-Fans are invited to WashCaps.com/CapsFightCancer to download an ‘I Fight For’ sign and use  #CapsFightCancer to share their own story.

-Fans can participate in an auction sponsored by the Caps and Monumental Sports & Entertainment.  Autographed player-worn jerseys, autographed Hockey Fights Cancer pucks, autographed lavender hats and a team-signed puck set are among the many items being auctioned off.  This fundraiser will end on Wednesday Nov. 24 at the Caps vs. Canadiens game.

-Fans can purchase tickets for Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation’s 50/50 raffle.  Raffle tickets will also be sold online at www.monumentalfoundation.org/5050.  Raffle participants must be 18 years of age or older and must be physically present within the borders of the District of Columbia when purchasing tickets; however, they need not be District residents.

-Fans can shop for lavender Capitals Hockey Fights Cancer apparel, including exclusive t-shirts, sweatshirts and hats, at washcaps.com/shopHFC

According to the National Cancer institute, approximately 39.5% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetimes making cancer among the leading causes of death worldwide.  This is an opportunity for Caps fans to acknowledge the hardships of those battling the disease and support such a worthy cause while cheering on the Caps.
