Alex Ovechkin Ties Wayne Gretzky for Most NHL Goals

via the Capitals

With Wayne Gretzky in attendance, Alex Ovechkin scored twice against the Chicago Blackhawks on Friday, netting his 893rd and 894th career goals to tie Gretzky for most goals in NHL history. Ovi even had a few more chances late in the game to get the record-breaking goal.

When Ovi tied the record, the team came off the bench to swarm him. He took a couple of victory laps and the Blackhawks even applauded him. After the game, the Blackhawks lined up to shake his hand.

The Caps gave Ovi a booze shower in the locker room.

“He doesn’t have it yet!” Gretzky said to journalist Chick Hernandez, who prematurely said that Ovi had the record. “Can you give me 24 more hours?”

Ovi also became the all-time leader in game-winning goals, passing Jaromir Jagr, with 136. He is also third in goals in the NHL this season, with 41.
