Capitals Trade Deadline Moves in the Ovechkin Era
Believe it or not, Rasmus Sandin is one of the better trade-deadline picks by the Caps (Caps Outsider)
Today is the NHL Trade Deadline, and the Capitals were sellers this season as they traded away Evgeny Kuznetsov, Anthony Mantha, and Joel Edmundson for draft picks.
Since the Alex Ovechkin era began in 2005-06, Washington typically gets short-term rentals prior to playoff runs, with the most successful acquisition being Michal Kempny in the 2018 Stanley Cup season, considering that they actually won that year. Even the Rasmus Sandin trade, which happened last year, is one of their better moves considering he just signed a contract and will be around for the foreseeable future.
Most of these trades, however, didn’t lead to very much, and often cost the team several draft picks, who in turn didn’t turn out to very much, either. We would have included those, too, but the players ultimately picked aren’t exactly household names.
