Alex Ovechkin and the First Star of the Month Award

(Caps Outsider)

Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s First Star of the month. You’d think, based on how good Ovi is, that this is an award he would have won quite a bit in his career. While he has won it seven times, statistically speaking, that’s not as out-of-this-world as we’ve come to expect from Ovi. In other words, he’s won the Rocket Richard trophy more times – 8 – than he’s won First Star of the month.

Ovi has, however, been the runner up for the award twice, and came in third twice. Also, the award didn’t come about until 2006-07, one year after Ovi’s rookie season. The NHL typically gives out the award six months of the year, skipping April.

  • Jan. 2020: First star
  • Feb. 2016: Second star
  • Feb. 2015: Third star
  • Jan. 2015: First star
  • April 2013 First star
  • Jan. 2010: First star
  • Oct. 2009 Second star
  • Dec. 2008 Third star
  • Nov. 2008 First star
  • March 2008: First star
  • Jan 2008: First star

As for the NHL’s Player of the Week award: Ovi has won it 15 times, including two weeks ago. He was a runner-up four times and came in third six times.
