T.J. Oshie Announces Retirement from the NHL

Capitals forward TJ Oshie announced Monday that he is retiring from the NHL after 16 seasons. The announcement was made in a ceremony at Georgetown Waterfront, exactly seven years after Oshie and his teammates celebrated there after winning the Stanley Cup.

Oshie, 38, finishes his NHL career with 695 points (302g, 393a) in 1,010 games with the Caps and the St. Louis Blues. He is also one of 164 skaters in NHL history to score 300-plus goals and play 1,000-plus games.

During his speech, Oshie talked about various points in his career, including his tenure with the St. Louis Blues, who selected him in the first round (24th overall) in the 2005 NHL Draft.

Oshie then talked about getting traded to the Capitals in the summer of 2015. The now-retired forward spent his last nine seasons with Washington, and won a Stanley Cup with the team in 2018. Oshie missed the entirety of the 2024-25 season due to a back injury.

At the end of the ceremony, the Capitals and Monumental Sports & Entertainment Foundation presented Oshie with a $10,000 donation to the Alzheimer’s Drug Discovery Foundation in recognition of Oshie’s career and in honor of his father, Tim Oshie.

Many were in attendance to see Oshie’s big announcement, including his family, his Capitals teammates Nicklas Backstrom and John Carlson, Caps head coach and recent Jack Adams award winner Spencer Carbery, Washington Nationals great Ryan Zimmerman, and many fans.
