Another Great Movember for Karl Alzner, Caps
(via the Caps)
There are few hockey players who take fundraising for Movember – a month to raise awareness for men’s health – as seriously as Caps defenseman Karl Alzner. This year, he was once again the Caps’ team captain and presented the Caps annual mustache awards:
- Jason Chimera won the captain’s choice award ‘best mustache’
- Michael Latta won the ‘Baby Face’ award
- Nate Schmidt won the ‘Peach Fuzz’ award
Here is the ceremony, which is an absolute must-watch.
As we reported at the beginning of the month, Alzner partnered with former Caps captain Jeff Halpern and his local company, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken, to raise even more funds. Astro Doughnuts made a special ‘Movember Doughnut’ and for each one sold, they donated $.27 (that’s Alzner’s number!) to Alzner’s Movember page. After a game recently, Alzner passed out doughnuts to the hockey writers in the Verizon Center media lounge.
While the Caps’ Movember team – which includes front office folks, as well as anyone who wants to join – earned $6,086 total, the players raised the following funds:
- Karl Alzner $1,257 ($1068.93 from Astro Doughnuts – 3959 doughnuts sold!)
- Tom Wilson $455
- Michael Latta $205
- TJ Oshie $110
- Stanislav Galiev $55
- Nate Schmidt $30
- Chris Brown $5
- Andre Burakovsky $5
- John Carlson $5
- Jason Chimera $5
- Philipp Grubauer $5
- Alex Ovechkin $5
- Chandler Stephenson $5
- Justin Williams $5
- Tom Wilson $5
Once again Caps writer Mike Vogel was competitive in the donations category, raising $926. This year’s total of $6,086 is an increase from last season, but far from 2011’s total. Last year, Liam O’Brien raised the most funds.
Caps team funds raised:
- 2014: $4,230
- 2013: $7,392
- 2012: $1,670 (Lockout season – Caps players weren’t involved)
- 2011: $10,095
Side note: Kudos to Tom Wilson, who took pictures each day to show his mustache growth.
A huge thanks to @tom_wilso for his 30 day #CapsMo photo diary. Last chance – donate here: https://t.co/IU83CL4hkjhttps://t.co/aOIyBiWwUu

Along with fundraising, Alzner also continued to fine-tune his potential post-hockey broadcasting career by interviewing teammates about their mustaches. These interviews never disappoint. Already looking forward to next year!
