Capitals Stave Off Flyers Comeback Bid

The Capitals faced the Philadelphia Flyers in Game 2 of a back-to-back on Wednesday night, this time at home. Washington jumped out to a 4-0 lead, then gave up three unanswered goals from Philly, but rebounded with two empty-net goals for the 6-3 victory.

Taylor Raddysh put the Caps on the board first in the opening period with his second goal with the team so far.

Washington then extended the lead with three more goals in the second period. Nic Dowd put the puck in the net right after being in the penalty box, while Connor McMichael scored back-to-back tallies.

However, the Flyers responded with two goals of their own in the middle frame, as Travis Konecny scored on the power play and Owen Tippett sent the puck past Logan Thompson.

Philadelphia’s power play came through again in the third period with a tally from Matvei Michkov, showing that Washington needs to do better on the penalty kill, despite scoring two shorthanded goals the night before.

Both teams kept it competitive with the score 4-3 until late in regulation when Pierre-Luc Dubois and Alex Ovechkin scored empty-net goals to seal it for the Capitals.

Both empty-netters were notable ones, as Dubois scored his first tally as a Cap while Ovechkin now has 855 career goals, needing only 40 more to pass Wayne Gretzky.

Thompson got the start in net and stopped 26 of 29 shots that came his way.
