A History of Alex Ovechkin’s Fights

Alex Ovechkin doesn’t fight much – just four times in his career – but plenty of people were shocked to see him throw down with 19-year-old Andrei Svechnikov on Tuesday as the Hurricanes beat the Caps, 5-0, in Game 3, knocking the Russian rookie out of the game.

It was the fourth pro fight for Ovechkin, and the first since 2010. Ovechkin famously battled Brandon Dubinsky in 2010 as the Caps were losing badly to the Rangers and Ovi told him ‘good job, buddy,’ as chronicled in HBO’s “24/7: Road to the Winter Classic.”

His first NHL fight was against future teammate Mike Richards on 9/26/2006 – during the preseason – and getting another a little more than two months later on Dec. 2.

Dec. 12, 2010 – Alex Ovechkin vs. Brandon Dubinsky

Ovi hip checks a guy and goes after Dubinsky. The fight was almost certainly because the Caps were losing badly and the captain was trying to spark his team.

Dec. 2, 2006 – Alex Ovechkin vs. Paul Gaustad

Ovechkin hits a player from behind and Gaustad goes after Ovi. This was barely even a fight.

Sept. 26, 2006 – Alex Ovechkin vs. Mike Richards

Several players are pushing and shoving and Ovi and Richards end up dropping the gloves, but it isn’t a great fight.
