Five days after Alex Ovechkin scored his record-breaking 895th career goal, the Washington Capitals honored their captain for the Gr8 City Celebration at Capital One Arena on Friday. The event was originally moved from Union Station due to an increased number of fans.
Ovechkin took the stage in the middle of Capital One Arena to talk to Alan May and Tarik El-Bashir about his 20-year career and breaking the record. He was also joined by his Capitals teammates Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie, as well as Capitals owner Ted Leonsis.
One of the biggest features of the celebration was real live goats, an obvious reference to Ovechkin. At the end of the ceremony, The Great 8 posed with a baby goat, which was from Squeals on Wheels.
Other interactive fan exhibits included the Long Island net that Ovi scored on for 895, various signs with that exact number, autograph sessions from Capitals alumni such as Peter Bondra, permanent tattoos, face painting, balloon art, and a photo booth.
The arena also featured a special “895 Shop,” where fans could purchase merchandise celebrating Ovechkin’s glorious milestone.
It may have been a rainy afternoon in D.C., but around 3,000 fans gathered at Capital One Arena to see Ovechkin and participate in all the fun activities. Some lucky fans were able to get autographs from him.
