Jakob Chychrun during warmups. (Caps Outsider)
On his 28th birthday Tuesday, Jakob Chychrun scored his 24th goal of the season, as he put home a power play goal from the point to give the Caps a 3-2 lead in the second period. Chychrun also had an assist on Ryan Leonard’s power play goal late in the second period, and another on Alex Ovechkin’s second goal of the game.
Earlier this season, Chychrun had a two-goal game the day after the birth of his first child, but the Caps lost that game and Chychrun was in no mood to talk about it.
Other Capitals Who Scored on the Birthdays
Chychrun is hardly the first Caps player to score on his birthday, as Evgeny Kuznetsov, Jason Chimera, and John Carlson have done it, as has Nicklas Backstrom, who scored the game-winner on November 23, 2007. In ancient times, Dino Ciccarelli celebrated his 31st birthday on February 8, 1991 by scoring a hat trick in a 6–3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers. Alex Ovechkin has not, but that’s only because the NHL season doesn’t start until long after September 17.
