“One Trick Pony” Scores as Caps Beat Rangers in OT Thriller

The Capitals continued to prove why they’re one of the best teams in hockey right now, as they beat the New York Rangers, 3-2 in OT, courtesy of Tom Wilson’s game-winning goal. Wilson also had an assist in the road win at Madison Square Garden.

Washington got on the board very early on when Pierre-Luc Dubois scored the opening goal 64 seconds into the contest. Dubois now has 16 tallies on the season, showing that he’s been a quality addition to the Caps.

The next time Washington scored was 10 minutes into the third period when Alex Ovechkin put the puck in the net on the power play to tie the game up at 2-2.

Ovechkin, who was called a “one-trick pony” by TNT analyst Darren Pang, now has 32 goals this season and 885 in his career, needing only 10 more to pass Wayne Gretzky.

With just one minute left in the five-minute overtime, Wilson and Dylan Strome skated into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1, as Strome waited with the puck and then fed it to Wilson in front for the game-winning tally.

The Capitals’ special teams really came to play on Wednesday evening. Along with the man advantage goal from The Great 8, Washington killed off all four power play opportunities from the Rangers, including a four-minute double-minor late in the first period.

The game also featured two fights from the Capitals and Rangers, both in the second period. Brandon Duhaime dropped the gloves with Sam Carrick (who had just scored to put New York ahead 2-1), while Matt Roy got into it with Juuso Parssinen.
