Photos: Caps Alumni Event, With Ovechkin!

(Photos by Caps Outsider)

The Capitals held their annual alumni schmooze on Friday at Stars & Spirits in Arlington, this time with a surprise appearance by Alex Ovechkin, plus Trevor Van Riemsdyk, Martin Fehervary and Nicolas Aube-Kubel.

Caps alumni included the usual gang of fun-loving roughians: Karl Alzner, Peter Bondra, John Druce, Alan Hangsleben, Matt Herr, Brent Johnson,Dmitri Khristich, Ken Klee, Olaf Kolzig, Nick Kypreos, Yvon Labre, Rod Langway, Craig Laughlin, Alan May, Kelly Miller, Paul Mulvey, Errol Rausse, Bill Riley, Ken Sabourin, Blair Stewart and Jim Thomson.

The Caps raised funds for youth hockey with a live auction, where folks paid big bucks to hang with alumni at different events. Karl Alzner even got a double donation by granting the top two bidders with rounds of golf instead of just one.

I caught up with several of the members. Bill Riley has been making more appearances with alumni after being away for 40 or so years. Nick Kypreos reminisced about fighting former teammates, including Scott Stevens. Alan Hangsleben still plays hockey at The Gardens Ice House in Laurel, Md. Kelly Miller told me about his coaching days with former Caps coach Peter Laviolette.
