Caps defenseman Erik Gustafsson just finished off a brilliant month for a blue-liner, with six goals and seven assists in 14 games. The month included a hat-trick, four multi-point games and a goal only :32 seconds into the game on Saturday against Montreal. He also finished the month with a 7-game point streak, and led the team in points since Dec. 17 with 13, and goals with six (tied with Alex Ovechkin).

To compare, he had no goals and three assists in October, no goals 6 assists in November.

“Gus really seems to be spreading his wings right now,” Coach Peter Laviolette said after the game.

As for his goal in Saturday’s 9-2 win, he said it was relatively easy, as he passed to Evgeny Kuznetsov, who passed it right back and he hit it into a virtually empty net.

His goal song? 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover by Paul Simon. You know, because of “Hop on the bus, Gus.”
