Caps Let One Slip to Maple Leafs

Oshie is starting to look like his old self. (Caps Outsider)

It was only ten days ago with the Toronto Maple Leafs secured a 7-3 victory against the Caps, blowing them out in Toronto just as the Caps themselves were gaining momentum down the stretch of the 2021-22 season.

Whether that game was just a one-off or a sign of things to come for the Caps, for a brief moment, the Maple Leafs looked far superior to any other team in the league. On Sunday, the Caps looked like the better team, going up 3-1, but ended up losing 4-3 in a shootout.

T.J. Oshie, in the midst of one of the worst seasons of his career due to injuries, scored on a vintage Oshie shot in the first period. He even scored another on a deflection, but it was overturned on a replay. Lars Eller scored on a great feed from Martin Fehervary, and Marcus Johansson scored on a slick backhand. The Leafs dug in their heels, scoring two late goals to tie the game. Alex Ovechkin exited the game with an injury.

Despite the loss, the highlight of the shootout was Evgeny Kuznetsov, who topped his super-slow-motion goal recently with this stick-twirling gem. If there’s anything to take from this game, it’s this.
