Alex Ovechkin Gets 28th Career Hat Trick, First GWG of Season

(Caps Outsider)

After getting his in the face in the first period Friday, Alex Ovechkin came back into the game against Florida, scored twice in just a matter of moments – including one on the power play – and scored again in the third period to get his 28th career regular season hat trick. He now has 18 goals on the season, and somehow registered only his first game-winning goal of the season.

“If I have a chance to shoot it I shoot, if I have the chance to pass it I pass. It’s a simple game,” Ovechkin said about getting a hat trick this game and having three assists the previous game.

He now has 748 career goals, good for fourth all-time, but he’s now only one away from tying Dave Andreychuk as the all-time power play goal leader with 274.

Ovi also passed Guy LaFleur and Brendan Shanahan on the all-time points list and is not 26th all-time, though at this point seeing how far he can climb up that list is merely a bonus as he chases Wayne Gretzky as the all-time goal leader.

Meanwhile, the 36-year-old is still challenging Oiler young guns Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl as this season’s points leader. It will be tough for Ovi to keep pace with those two but 21 games into the season, he’s right there, as he continues the hottest start of his career.
