Alex Ovechkin Passes Mark Messier on All-Time Goals List
(Caps Outsider)
With two goals on Friday, Alex Ovechkin passed Mark Messier for eighth place on the all-time goals list, with his 695th goal of his career.
While scoring 700 will be Ovechkin’s next major milestone, he won’t be moving up the all-time goals list until he passes former Cap Mike Gartner, who has 708 career goals.
It was also the first time in his career that Ovechkin scored 11 goals in a five-game stretch, including two hat-tricks. The best part of Ovechkin scoring his 695th goal – an empty netter in a 5-3 win – was that Senators fans were chanting his name.
Ovechkin also tied Boston’s David Pastrnak with 37 goals on the season, as he goes for his ninth Rocket Richard trophy.
