Carl Hagelin Scores Breakaway Goal

Carl Hagelin has endured a tough game against the Winnipeg Jets this evening. He has taken two minor penalties in the 2nd period, but just made good with a breakaway goal moments after cross-checking Mark Scheifele. As the penalty ended and Hagelin emerged from the box, Nick Dowd sprung him up the middle with a tremendous backhand clear. Hagelin gobbled up the puck in stride and used his speed to stay in front of the defense before putting away the breakaway goal through Hellebuyck’s five-hole.

The goal gave the Capitals a 2-1 lead in their 8th shot of the game, more than halfway through a contest where they’ve struggled to put the puck on net. It was an excellent play by Hagelin, but there is no overstating what a great pass Nick Dowd flicked up the ice to make it possible. During the intermission interview, he indicated that the crowd noise let him know what Hagelin had emerged from the box.
