Ten Notes From Day One of Development Camp

Ilya Samsonov (Caps Outsider)

The Caps kicked off their annual development camp on Tuesday, where prospects came to Kettler. Here are the top ten pieces of information from the day:

  1. The first autograph of development camp came from 2016 5th round pick Beck Malenstyn.
  2. Caps 2017 first round pick Lucas Johansen has gained weight in attempts to bulk-up and is up to 188 pounds. He says he lost about three pounds on a plane traveling to DC for development camp.
  3. Axel Jonsson-Fjallby still has his flow. It takes him about “two years” for him to grow his hair out.
  4. Ilya Samsonov did not practice in the morning session due to an equipment issue. He was all set and ready to go for the afternoon session. Samsnov’s English is still not present.
  5. With the Caps and Bears without a head coach (the Bears later hired Spencer Carbery), no single person is running development camp. Stingrays head coach Ryan Warsofsky is present.
  6. While many are getting swept up in the Fortnite hype, Steve Richmond isn’t worried about it affecting the Caps.  Richmond was first made aware of the issue at the NHL combine.
  7. The Caps have nine current or former WHL players at development camp.
  8. Michal Kempny, while still not signed, says staying in Washington is his top priority. The Caps are reportedly waiting to hear back on an offer.
  9. John Walton did not be call the alumni game and will not call the intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday, as he is resting his voice after a deep playoff run plus the Olympics.
  10. Jonas Sigenthaler who after sometime spent his first full season in North America last year, felt “pretty comfortable” today and is looking forward to a “fun” week.
