Bears Fall to Checkers, 5-2 (Photos)

The Hershey Bears hosted the Charlotte Checkers for the second straight night.  Last night the Bears won in a shoot out 6-5 in an exciting game.  Today was different.

1st Period:

The Checkers knew they had to respond after losing in a shoot out last evening.  They fought their way to come back into the game but lost the extra point they were seeking.

Pheonix Copley

Charlotte started off the scoring in the first period and the first shot of the game.  The goal had to be reviewed as it was a quick shot that hit the back bar that came off the stick of Aleksi Saarela.

If you are a Bears fan, the next event was the only highlight of the period.  Anthony Peulso got into a fight with Zack Stortini and it lasted a whole two minutes! You would of hoped this fight would of sparked some fire into Hershey, but you would be wrong.

Charlotte would go on to score four more goals in the period.  Phenoix Copley would be pulled after the fourth goal and Vitek Vanecek would let in one more.

This is not the start any team wants to have if you are on the losing end.   Only one could wonder what was said inside the locker room of the Hershey Bears at the intermissions.

2nd Period:

Whatever was said in the Bears locker room seemed to work.  You could see they were not about to quit and had fire in them.  They beat the Checkers to almost every puck in the corners and to the net.

This would finally pay off on the power play.  Riley Barber would cash one home to bring some hope back to the Bears.  It was a shot from Connor Hobbs from the point that was blocked and created a scramble in front of the net.  Riley Barber would pick up the loose puck and score the Bears first goal.

The Hershey Bears would score thirty seconds later and almost the exact same way.  Tyler Lewington would shoot a puck from the point which was blocked and picked up by Tyler Graovac as he put it in the back of the net.

Tyler Graovac celebrates his goal.

This would give the Bears and the crowd that stayed to watch the rest of the game some life going into the third period.

2nd Period Shots: CHA – 7, HER – 14

2nd Period Scoring:

HER Goal: 14:12 – Riley Barber (16), Assist(s): Nathan Walker (6), Connor Hobbs (6) (PP)

HER Goal: 14:42 – Tyler Graovac (8), Assist(s): Mathias Bau (8), Tyler Lewington (7)

3rd Period:

The Bears had to come out strong and get something going early.  This did not happen. The forecheck was nonexistent as well as the speed they had in the second period.

The Checkers put the neutral zone trap to protect their lead which created a mess for Hershey trying to enter the zone.  It also makes for an uneventful period.

3rd Period Shots: CHA – 10, HER – 9

Total Shots: CHA 29, HER – 31

3rd Period Scoring: None

Three Stars:

  1. CHA – Aleksi Saarela – 2 goals
  2. CHA – Andrew Miller – 1 goal, 1 assist
  3. CHA – Alex Nedeljkovic – 29 saves on 31 shots

The Hershey Bears return to the ice in Lehigh Valley on Friday to face off against the Phantoms.
