Kuznetsov Snaps Ovechkin’s Streak as Caps Points Leader

Kuznetsov (Caps Outsider)

For the first time in a decade, Alex Ovechkin did not sit atop the leaderboard for the Caps in the total points department, passing the crown to fellow Russian Evgeny Kuznetsov.

Though Ovechkin is still the best goal-scorer in the NHL, his overall point output dropped to the second lowest of his career (not including the lockout-shortened season). In 79 games, he scored 50 goals and assisted on a career-low 21, for 71 points. His lowest output in 2011-12 was 38 goals and 27 assists for 65 points. In 2013-14, Ovechkin was tied with Backstrom with 79 points to lead the team.

What happened to Ovechkin’s assists? We answered that March 29, when he still had 21 assists.

Kuznetsov, meanwhile, led the teams in points with 20 goals and 57 assists, despite not having scored a goal since March 1.

Other nuggets: Ovechkin led the league in power play goals with 19, and shots with 398. It was his fourth highest shots output of his career. His +21 was also the fourth highest of his career. He was tied for fourth in the league with 8 game winners. The oddest stat: 2015-16 was the first season Ovechkin didn’t take a single faceoff.

Craig Laughlin pointed out an interesting factoid: The last Caps point leader prior to Ovechkin was former captain Jeff Halpern.

Congratulations, Kuzy, for leading the team in points. Congratulations to Ovechkin for a solid decade atop that board, and your sixth Rocket Richard Trophy!
