Stingrays Week 5 Recap: Solar Bear Split

Brendan Ellis and Patrick Gaul scored the only Stingrays goals all weekend as the team spilt the weekend series with the Orlando Solar Bears in a pair of shootout decisions.

Friday night’s contest wen the way of the hosts. Gaul scored his first of the season at 10:06 with help from Brett Cameron. Vitek Vanecek conceded his lone goal to Eric Faille in the last six minutes of regulation. Overtime solved nothing but Joe Devin solved Rob Maddore in the shootout. All three of Orlando’s shooters missed on Vanecek and the Stingrays skated to a 2-1 victory.

Vanecek held down the fort on Saturday as well, only allowing one goal on 24 shots. At 5:02 of the second period, 34 penalty minutes were doled out when Mark Louis and Marcus Perrier fought as well as Brad Richard and Bobby Shea. Louis recieved a slashing minor, a fighting major, and a game misconduct for contiuing the altercation; Perrier got an additional roughing minor. Five minutes later, Brett Findlay tied the game at one. Overtime saw Rob Maddore stone the Stingrays on a two-on-zero rush to force a shootout. Denver Manderson scored first and no Stingray could respond as the game ended 2-1.
