About midway through the 2nd period, the Capitals were trailing 2-0 in tonight’s contest against the visiting Hurricanes, when a familiar video came on at Verizon Center. It was the “Unleash the Fury” video, which is normally reserved for the 3rd period. Corey Masisak of the Washington Times commented on Twitter, “game-night staff resorting to “Unleash the Fury” video midway through the 2nd period? Against the worst team in the league? Yikes.”
The Capitals and their fans shouldn’t have needed it, but they did, and it worked. The Capitals went on to score two goals in the 2nd period, and won the game in overtime 4-3. In Coach Boudreau’s post-game press conference, he mentioned it as a turning point :
Never underestimate the power of the fans to jump start a team.
