Retro Stuff: Banzai Poster

Allow me to introduce you to another regular feature here on Capitals Outsider, “Retro Stuff”. This is where we will share with you a piece of Retro memorabilia from either our own collections, or something that you send into us. Realistically this just gives me a chance to justify why I have been keeping this junk for all of these years, but I though you would enjoy seeing some of it.

First up is my cherished “Banzai” poster. Printed in 1994, it was given out at the Capital Centre in order to commemorate Peter Bondra’s record breaking game against Tampa Bay. The paragraph below will describe the feat. I had the poster laminated, and it has been with me ever since. By the looks of the logo in the lower right hand corner, it was brought to us by the good folks at Wendy’s. It currently hangs in my garage along with some other good Caps stuff (which I will share in the future). Here is the text from the bottom of the poster:

On February 5, 1994, Peter “Banzai” Bondra struck like lightning against Tampa Bay when he scored 5 goals to tie a Capitals record established ten years prior by Bengt Gustafsson. The pucks fired from Bondra’s stick that night also shattered a number of other individual club records: Fastest 3 goals scored in a game (2:06); Fastest 4 goals scored in a game (4:12); Most goals scored in one period (4). Bondra’s performance also tied the NHL record for the most goals scored in one period (4) and set the NHL record for the fastest 4 goals scored by one player in a game (4:12).

Any of you have one of these still? How about something better? If so, send us an e-mail at [email protected] with a photo and description of your Retro Stuff. We’ll feature it in an upcoming post, so that we can all share in the memories.
