Bears Announce Garrett Mitchell as Captain, Release Opening Night Roster

Garrett Mitchell (M. Richter)

Team president and general manager Doug Yingst announced today that Garrett Mitchell will serves as the Hershey Bears 43rd team captain. He takes over the role from Dane Byers and Steve Oleksy, who both served as captain in 2014-15.

Additionally, defenseman Mike Moore and forwards Chris Borque and Zach Sill will be the alternate captains.

Moore, 30, returns as alternate after an injury shortened season last year where he played 41 games and notched 14 points (3 goals, 11 assists). In the playoffs, Moore played nine games and had one assist.

Bourque returns to Chocolate Town after the Capitals traded him to the Boston Bruins in 2012. He spent one season in Boston before jumping to Europe, playing in the KHL and the Swiss-A league. After last season with the Hartford Wolf Pack, Washington signed the 29 year-old forward. Bourque is tied for 14th all-time in Bears scoring with 393 points (131 goals, 262 assists) in 392 career games with the organization.

Sill is on a one-year contract with the Caps and the center could be called-up due to injury during the season. After spending his entire pro career with the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, he was traded along with two draft picks to Toronto for Daniel Winnik. Sill played 63 NHL games last season, but will start the year in Hershey.

Opening Night for the Bears is Saturday, October 10th when they visit the Sprigfield Falcons. Their roster is as follows:

GOALTENDERS (2): Dan Ellis, Justin Peters
