Late Penalty Costs Caps in OT

The Capitals hosted Macklin Celebrini and the San Jose Sharks for an interconference matchup Tuesday. With the game tied 1-1 near the end of regulation, Tom Wilson took a double minor, which carried over into overtime before the Sharks scored and won, 2-1.

Wilson was hit with a double minor for high sticking Celebrini with under three minutes left in regulation, before William Eklund scored the game-winning power play goal for San Jose in OT.

The Capitals’ power play was red-hot going into this contest (even without Alex Ovechkin), but the team went 0-for-3 on the man advantage against the Sharks. One of those power plays was abbreviated due to a Jakob Chychrun slashing penalty.

Despite the loss, Logan Thompson notched 29 saves against a Sharks team that played aggressively on the road.

Down 1-0 in the middle frame, Nic Dowd scored the game-tying tally off a feed from Martin Fehervary. Ivan Miroshnichenko was credited with the secondary assist and now has a three-game point streak, along with four in his last five games.

While the Caps did get a standings point, their four-game winning streak came to an end as they now sit at 17-6-2 atop the Eastern Conference.
