Alex Ovechkin Scores Late as Caps Beat Predators

Ted Leonsis wins 1,000th game as owner

The Washington Capitals have been red hot at home this season as they beat the Nashville Predators 3-2. It’s the Caps’ seventh consecutive win at Capital One Arena as they improve to 9-3-0 on the season.

Connor McMichael scored Washington’s first goal to tie it up at 1-1 in the first period, while Aliaksei Protas recorded the team’s second goal off an Alex Ovechkin assist in the middle frame.

With the score tied at 2-2 midway through the third period, Ovechkin put the Capitals on top with career goal No. 861, needing only 34 tallies to pass Wayne Gretzky. It’s also Ovi’s eighth goal of the season as he extends his goal streak to five games.

Washington wore their black Screamin’ Eagle jerseys in the contest, as Ovechkin has now scored a goal each time the team wears the retro uniforms.

Dylan Strome recorded his 200th career NHL assist on Ovechkin’s go-ahead goal. With two assists, Strome has now recorded four multi-assist performances in his last five games dating back to Oct. 29.

However, the Capitals didn’t exactly have the best luck on the power play, as they went 0-for-6 on the man advantage.

Washington also gave up 35 shots on goal, but Logan Thompson was able to stop 33 of them, including a late shot by Filip Forsberg with seven seconds left.

This victory was also special as it marked the Capitals’ 1,000th win under Ted Leonsis, who has owned the franchise since the 1999-2000 season.
