Alex Ovechkin Is NHL’s First Star of the Month

After an impressive start to the season, Alexander Ovechkin is the NHL’s first “Star of the Month” for the month of October.

Ovi came out hot with 4pts (2g,2a) in the home opener against the Rangers and has not slowed down, scoring in every game but one for a league-leading nine goals in eight games.

“He’s playing well. He’s playing well on both sides of the puck,” said Coach Peter Laviolette of Ovi during a press conference on Wednesday.

Of the Capitals’ 30 goals scored this season, Ovechkin has been responsible for nearly a third of them. The contributions of Ovechkin have led the Caps to a 5-0-3 record in the month of October, as Washington earned 13 points, enough to put them near the top of the Metropolitan Division as well as the league heading into November.

In fact, Washington entered November without a loss in regulation for the first time in franchise history.

“It’s good. Every point we can take, we’ve taken,” said Ovechkin in a press conference on Sunday, when asked about the previous month. “Sometimes it was an ugly one but you know every point is going to count in the end.”

Through the opening month, Ovechkin has proven that he is still one the greatest goal-scorers in the league and is on pace to break even more records this season as he sits only three goals away from passing Brett Hull (741) for sole possession of fourth place on the NHL’s all-time leading goal list.

After a dominant October, Ovi will look to continue his red hot start and help lead the Capitals to another successful month.
