The Washington Capitals traded Jakub Vrana, Richard Panik, a 2021 1st round pick and a 2022 2nd round pick to the Detroit Red Wings for Anthony Mantha. In a separate move, the Caps traded a 5th round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Michael Raffl.
Vrana, a key player in the 2018 Stanley Cup run, had 77 points, including 36 goals, in 108 games over the last two seasons. However, he had zero points over the last two playoff seasons. Vrana, 25, a restricted free agent at season’s end, was drafted 13th overall by the Caps in 2014. Vrana was recently a healthy scratch.
Jakub Vrána (in return to Detroit) is also a strong play driver, weaker defensively but with an even better shot. He deserved more minutes than he ever got in Washington and I guess now he'll get them. pic.twitter.com/QyxCDOv78L

Jakub Vrana, acquired by DET, has been stuck in third line minutes but he's one of the league's most efficient goal scorers at 5v5, has an excellent shot, and is no slouch at driving offence either. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/84ciheyI0l

Panik, 30, was brought in as a free agent signing before the 2019-20 season. He was signed through the 2022-23 season with a cap hit of $2.75M. Panik had 31 points in 95 games in Washington. Recently he cleared waivers after being a healthy scratch in favor of Daniel Sprong and Conor Sheary.
Panik (also in return to Detroit with a bevy of picks) is a shut-down forward with some shooting talent and a good penalty differential. pic.twitter.com/8D1DQopT0Z

Richard Panik, acquired by DET, is a perfectly good bottom six winger with two years left on a $2.8M contract. Not bad value but not the kind of deal most teams want in a flat-cap environment. #LGRW pic.twitter.com/vDv7tQxgK7

Mantha, 26, was drafted 20th overall in 2013 by the Red Wings and is signed through 2023-24 at a cap hit of $5..75M. Mantha has 21 points in 42 games for an atrocious Detroit team.
Anthony Mantha, acquired by WSH, is an excellent playdriver at both ends of the ice and a strong scorer. On a very good value contract as well. #AllCaps pic.twitter.com/rs5EopJm8I

In addition, the Caps traded a 5th round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers for Raffl, 32. Raffl has eight points in 34 games this season. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.
