Alex Ovechkin Continues to Boggle Our Minds

(Caps Outsider)

Alex Ovechkin did a couple of interesting things on Friday, outside of scoring two goals in the third period to lift the Caps to a 2-1 victory against the New York Rangers, their seventh win in a row.

His two goals gave him 147 career multi-point games, which ties Gordie Howe for fourth all-time.

It was also the fifth straight game that Ovi scored, giving him a streak of five or more games with a goal for the 12th time in his career. His best streak is seven straight games.

The game-winning goal also gave him 116 of those, two behind Phil Esposito for third all-time. That almost feels anti-climatic since Ovi already passed Esposito in career goals in his last game.

Oddly enough, the two goals he scored Friday, out in front of the net, respembled classic Esposito goals more so than classic Ovi ones.

“Sometimes you have to get those really gritty ones,” he told reporters after the game. “It’s still the same whether it’s goal from my spot or whatever. It’s most important goal and it’ll take it.”

Because Ovi got the Cobra Kai headband of the game last game, it was his job to hand it out to another stellar offensive player this game. For some reason he gave it to Evgeny Kuznetsov. I suppose there’s a rule about giving it to yourself.

Enjoy this as it’s happening, folks. This is a once-in-a-lifetime kind of player for most teams.
