Farewell, Phil. Alex Ovechkin Passes Esposito
Caps superstar Alex Ovechkin scored his 718th career goal on Tuesday, one better than the great Phil Esposito and good for sole possession of sixth place on the all-time list. Ovi did it in 105 fewer games than Esposito.
The goal came on the power play from the top left circle, just like many of his goals. It put the Caps ahead of the Islanders, 2-0, before they won, 3-1.
Former Caps coach and current Islanders coach Barry Trotz was asked about Ovechkin after the game. “I do recognize his greatness, and the milestones. I cheer for him, no question, just not when he plays against us.”
Ovi now trails Marcel Dionne (731), Brett Hull (741), Jaromir Jagr (766), Gordie Howe (801), and Wayne Gretzky (894) on the all-time goals list.
Ovi also passed 1,300 career points in the game with an assist before his goal.
