The fans have spoken! Millions of votes were cast for the 2019 NHL Fans Choice Awards. The results of the second annual wild and wacky awards, that celebrate the best of the best on hockey social media, were announced Wednesday, June 19. Caps fans around the world came through and our one and only Alex Ovechkin won for the two categories in which he was nominated. Our illustrious captain won for Best Hockey Smile and Best Hockey Moment.
Ovi winning for Best Hockey Smile was a no-brainer as he led in the voting from the very beginning. After all, who can resist his signature grin? Best Hockey Moment was a tough category, with strict competition from The Philadelphia Flyers’ mascot, Gritty. The Caps’ Stanley Cup celebration featuring Ovi at the Georgetown Harbor fountain just eked out the scruffy, orange newcomer by 1 percentage point!
