Lehigh Valley Dominates Hershey, 6-1

Lehigh Valley controls the pace of the game and defeats Hershey 6-1.  Tyrell Goulbourne and Taylor Leier both score two goals for the Phantoms.  Ilya Samsonov allows 6 goals on 30 shots.

The Hershey Bears (12-16-0-1) host the Lehigh Valley Phantoms (16-9-1-2) in their fifth meeting of the season.  The Bears have not scored against the Phantoms in their last two meetings, losing 1-0 and 5-0.  The last Bear to score against the phantoms was Jayson Megna on November 23rd.  Hershey will look for a solution while taking this series back to the Giant Center.

1st Period:

Early in the period, Bears defenseman Joey Leach took a shot from the point and broke his stick.  Phantoms center Steven Swavely picked up the loose puck, passed the puck to Tyrell Goulbourne who then chipped the puck over a stickless, diving Leach then scored on a 2 on 1.  The puck beat Ilya Samsonov just under the glove hand.  This goal was Goulbourne’s second goal of the season and gave the Phantoms a 1-0 lead.

The Bears were being dominated but found some relief just before the period ended.  Ryan Sproul waited patiently, looking for a passing option and found Riley Barber entering the zone late.  Barber found the back of the net with just 1.9 seconds remaining in the period, going to the locker room with a tie game.  This was Barbers 11th goal of the season and more importantly, breaking the shutout streak the Phantoms held over the Bears (streak of 167:18 of shutout hockey).

2nd Period:

The second period was a rough one for the Bears.  Ryan Sproul could not handle the puck when dumped into the zone.  The Phantoms gained control when Zach Palmquist scored on a one timer from the point.  This was Palmquist’s second goal of the season.

Less than a minute later, the Phantoms struck again.  This time Philippe Myers took a slap shot form the point and Tyrell Goulbourne tipped the puck past Samsonov.  This was Goulbourne’s second goal of the game that gave the Phantoms a 3-1 lead.

The Phantoms added one more before heading to the locker room.  The Bears tried to clear the puck but turned it over and got caught in transition.  Reece Wilcox made a great pass to Carsen Twarynski who was open across the neutral zone.  Twarynski beat Samsonov short side, just under the blocker, giving the Phantoms a 4-1 lead.

3rd Period:

The Phantoms continued their dominance, this time scoring on the power play.  Steven Swavely played the puck behind Samsonov’s net and passed the puck to Taylor Leier who was alone in front of the net.  This tricked Samsonov, not expecting the puck to come around the same side and Leier scored his 5th goal of the season and the fifth goal of the night.

Taylor Leier would score another goal two minutes later.  Right off of a face-off win from Mikhail Vorobyev, Leier shot the puck that sniped the glove side of Samsonov.  This gave the Phantoms a 6-1 lead.

The Lehigh Valley Phantoms go on to defeat the Hershey Bears 6-1.
