Hershey Bears

Star Wars Night at the Hershey Bears Game (Photos)

Star Wars invaded the Giant Center in Hershey on Sunday.  The stadium was filled with characters from the movie along with fans dressed the part.  The players took the ice with custom jerseys and socks to make the night special.  After the game, the jerseys were auctioned off and the proceeds went to local charities.

The first period started out with a lot of fire power from the Charlotte Checkers.  After losing 5-1 last night to the Bears, the Checkers wanted to set the tone early with hard hitting and a lot of shots.  Hershey countered with a nice forecheck that ended with the ultimate prize.  A goal from Riley Barber after a defensive mistake by Charlotte.  The goal came 1:25 into the first period.

The new line of Graovac, Walker and Barber was hot all game and was rewarded once again with a nice tap in play from Tyler Graovac.  The goal came at 14:44 into the first with Walker and Barber getting assists.

The second period started looking more like the Checkers we are used to seeing (2nd highest scoring team in the league).  Mistakes started piling up for the Bears as well.  Two straight penalties gave the Checkers a very long 5 on 3 power play.  Fortunate for the Bears that Vanecek was on top of his game.  Stopping every shot while making it look easy.  The only time it got dangerous is when a shot rang off of the cross bar and out of play.  After this power play, momentum turned back into Hershey’s favor.

Third period the frustration started setting in for Charlotte.  Only one goal in the last five periods against Hershey can do that.  This frustration turned into penalties, giving the Bears their fourth power play of the evening.  This would be costly for the Checkers as Travis Boyd puts one home from the slot.  The goal came 9:32 into the third with assists from Bau and Bourque.

Checkers pulled the goalie with four minutes remaining.  Putting all the pressure in front of the Vanecek’s crease, but he answered the call.  Vitek turned away every shot that came his way, earning his 29 save shut out.  The Hershey Bears go on to defeat the Charlotte Checkers 3-0.

Three Stars:

1.) Vitek Vanecek – 29 Save shut out.

2.) Tyler Graovac – 1 Goal

3.) Riley Barber – 1 Goal (GWG) and 1 assist.
