Only Kuznetsov Knew Vrana Scored

(Caps Outsider)

Jakub Vrana was drafted in 2014 and finally made his debut with the Caps this season. With plenty of holes to fill in the roster and a need for the new guys to step up, Vrana scored twice on Wednesday, his 5th and 6th goal of the season, and first multi-goal game of his career.

Vrana’s second goal of the game got stuck under the net, and was lost for a moment before most folks realized it went in.

“Nobody stand up in the crowd so I didn’t know,” Vrana said of his second goal. “And I just saw Kuzy was pointing like a ref.”

“One of their defensemen asked where it was and I said it was out,” T.J. Oshie said. “I thought it went out of the rink. April fools. November fools.”

Vrana, Evgeny Kuznetsov, and Oshie and were the first, second and third stars of the game, a line they only found out about that morning. Barry Trotz said he’d been thinking about getting Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom back together for a while now so the Vrana-Kuzy-Oshie second line emerged.

As for the 21-year-old Vrana, he’s got plenty of time to grow. But with the Caps in desperate need of secondary scoring, his performance in the Caps’ 5-2 win could be the first glimpse of the player he’ll eventually become, and more importantly, the player the Caps need him to be.
