Caps third-string goaltender Philipp Grubauer earned his first career victory against the Rangers on Sunday thanks to a 4-1 effort in New York.

For the past couple of seasons, Grubauer has put up solid number in the ECHL with both the South Carolina Stingrays and the Reading Royals, and in the AHL with the Hershey Bears. Grubauer is even popular enough in Hershey to have earned his own bobblhead, which will be given out Jan. 4.

With an injury to Michal Neuvirth, and back-to-back games this weekend, Grubauer got only his second career NHL start Sunday. He made 30 saves, giving up only one goal late in the game off of a mid-air deflection. Grubauer’s first career start came last season in a loss, and he showed up twice in relief, including against Carolina last week.

When Neuvirth returns from injury, Grubauer will be sent back down to Hershey. But it’s refreshing to know that the Caps have him waiting in the wings when they need him.
