In honor of Arturs Irbe, who is leaving the Caps, Capitals Outsider is republishing this post from February.
One Capitals coach that doesn’t get enough recognition this season for the relatively awesome goaltending (yes, it’s awesome) is former NHL goaltender Artūrs Irbe. Seeing him in the press box and during practice, he strikes me as a likable goofball whose humor is enhanced by his accent. I might be completely wrong about that since I don’t know the guy, but it’s just the impression I’ve gotten when I’ve seen him, which is not the case with all of the coaches (one of whom scares me).
Then I saw this commercial of Irbe when he was with the Hurricanes, and realized it’s his ‘Chick Dig It’ moment (ala Gheorghe Mureşan). When you run into Irbe, remind him of this with a smile:
