Kuznetsov and his ‘Lucky’ Plays

(Caps Outsider)

Evgeny Kuznetsov is a wizard. At least, thats what he appears to be when he’s got the puck down low, sending deceptive backhand passes to wide-open teammates who score in a flash. Though we’ve seen the trick before, it never gets old, and he did it again Wednesday as he set up Alex Ovechkin in the third period during the Caps’ 5-2 victory against Buffalo.

“It’s a lucky play, always,” Kuznetsov said when asked about his plays behind the net. Has he always been good at those behind-the-net plays? Does he practice those moves? HOW DOES HE DO THAT?

“You wanna know all my secrets, yeah?” Kuzy said, laughing.

“He knows where everybody is. He puts it right on your tape. I probably could score a couple of goals playing with him,” Coach Barry Trotz said after the game, praising everything about Kuzy. After everyone laughed, he clarified: “I only said a couple!”

Kuzy ended up with two assists, and came an inch away from scoring on an empty-netter at the in the closing minute. He’s tied with Ovechkin for the team lead in points with 33 – 11 goals and 22 assists.

Trotz continued. “He’s entering the front end of the prime of his career, so it’s exciting to see where he can take it.”
