With the trade of Chris Clark, the Capitals now have a vacancy at the Captain position. With the trade happening just before game time, no player wore the Captain’s “C” this evening. Three players skated with the Alternate Captain “A”; Alex Ovechkin, Mike Knuble, and Brendan Morrison. Considering those roles, those three would have to be the leading candidates for the position, however don’t expect a selection to come immediately. When we asked Coach Boudreau about the situation after the game, he informed us that they would take their time, and be sure to make the right choice :

The Washington Capitals have traded Chris Clark and Milan Jurcina to the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Jason Chimera.
Chris Clark, the Capitals’ Captain, has spent parts of 5 seasons in Washington, with two seasons being greatly shortened due to injury. He scored 123 points with the Capitals, however 93 of those points came in his first two seasons, and he has only scored 30 points in the 2.5 seasons since. Jurcina has spent part of four seasons with the Capitals, playing in 311 games, and registering just 36 points.
Jason Chimera is a 30 year old Wing from Edmonton, Alberta. [...]

This image appeared in the final moments of the Redskins second straight embarrassing loss on National Television last evening. As you can see from the score, they were shut-out by the hated Cowboys, and the camera man found this sign in the crowd as the final seconds ticked off.
Al Michaels commented that Washington isn’t Hockeytown, or Detroit, just yet. However anyone tracking the trajectory of these two teams over the past several years would have to wonder why anyone would pay to watch the Redskins, while attending a Capitals game is such a better experience. Screw the Skins, LET’S GO [...]

The big news of the night, aside from the Capitals regaining first place in the league with a 4-1 walloping of the New Jersey Devils, was Alexander Semin coming to terms with the team to stay an extra year. Semin even came out to ‘talk’ to reporters. That means overtime work for Russian reporter Dmitry Chesnokov, who has the microphones shoved into his face as he translates Semin’s answers.
When asked to comment on Semin’s extension, Coach Boudreau’s first response was: “It’s my first time hearing about it.”
The cool-as-a-cucumber general manager George McPhee came out to speak with reporters about Semin. [...]

Do you recognize the man in this photo? If you don’t, then you likely don’t pay close attention to who is singing the national anthem while you’re at a Capitals, Wizards, Nationals, Orioles, Redskins or even a Potomac Nationals game.
Master sergeant Caleb B. Green III, a solo vocalist with the United States Army Band, has sung at nearly a season’s worth of Caps games since he was stationed here in 1999.
But if you’re not a sports fan, you still may recognize him, or at the very least his voice, because he sang at a small event known as the Obama [...]

Legendary Washington sportscaster George Michael died Thursday, and Capitals Outsider is in deep mourning. But instead of doing a tribute, where we say what a great guy he was and how he was the best D.C. sportscaster ever, if not the best sportscaster ever, let’s roast him a bit by rewinding a year and a half to this discussion with Michael Wilbon and Tony Kornheiser. George, we’ll miss you!
Another Michael video – on wrestling – after the jump.

Of all the national anthem singers at Capitals games this season, no one has brought the fans out of their seats and made them more patriotic than 12-year-old singing sensation Christian Stewart. Wednesday’s game against Buffalo was Stewart’s second Caps game, and if popular demand gets him more gigs, he’ll be singing at many more.
Last year, the Nationals held an open audition at ESPN Zone, and Stewart won the chance to sing the anthem at a Nats game. In two seasons, the Waldorf resident impressed the crowd twice at Nationals Park before he made his way over to the Caps.

Craig Laughlin was a guest on Coatesy’s Corner a couple months ago but since it is a Philly show many Caps fans haven’t seen it. Check it out:
