Protas Brothers Are a Pair of Several Brothers Who Suited Up Together for the Caps

On Wednesday against the Maple Leafs, Ilya and Alexei Protas played their first regular season game together in Washington, and they even earned an assist on Cole Hudson’s empty net goal in the 4-0 win.
The pair is one of a few sets of brothers who have suited up for the Capitals in their history. Here are the others:
While this wasn’t in the regular season, Dylan and Matt Strome played together for the first time in a professional game during the 2025 preseason. Matt has primarily played for their AHL affiliate, the Hershey Bears.
In October 1992, the Capitals roster included two sets of brothers Dale and Mark Hunter, alongside Kelly and Kevin Miller. This is the only time multiple sets of brothers played simultaneously for the Caps until the Protas and Strome preseason pairing in 2025. Kip Miller also played for the Capitals, but at a different time.
There’s one more that few fans will remember. Identical twins Chris and Peter Ferraro both played for the Capitals, appearing in one game together on Oct. 16, 2001. The two combined for five games with the Caps.
Some came close, like Doug and Wes Jarvis, who missed each other in Washington by a month as one was traded away and the other was acquired. Something similar happened with with Todd and Jeff Nelson, who missed each other by a season.
