Fare Thee Well, Specialty Warm-Up Jerseys

The NHL announced that teams will no longer be allowed to wear specialty warm-up jerseys. This is in response to LGBT-themed jerseys for Pride Nights, which some players, including Marc and Eric Staal, prefer not to wear, thus creating controversy.

Up until recently, warm-up jerseys consisted almost entirely of purple ones for ‘Hockey Fights Cancer,’ military ones for ‘Salute the Military,’ and green ones for ‘Go Green’ initiatives (which coincided with St. Patrick’s Day). Lately, however, teams have introduced more, including Pride Night jerseys, Title IX jerseys, and even cherry blossom jerseys.

The purpose of these jerseys, monetarily speaking, is to auction them off the worn ones for charity, and sell new ones to fans (which they still might do). Considering how much money the Caps and other teams have raised for charitable causes, they’ll most certainly find other ways to make up for it.
