Obvious Choice: Alex Ovechkin Is NHL’s First Star of the Month

In the least surprising news of late, the NHL named Washington’s captain Alex Ovechkin was named the NHL’s First Star for the month of December.

He put up 22 points, including 13 goals, in 15 games, plus had a point in 11 of those games. He was also named the NHL’s star of the week in two consecutive weeks, plus two hat tricks. The Caps, meanwhile, had an 11-2-2 record, good for 24 points.

He scored twice on Dec. 23 against Winnipeg, which tied and passed Gordie Howe with 801 and 802 goals for the second most in NHL history. Ovechkin also passed Ray Bourque for the most shots in NHL history at 6,209.

Edmonton’s Connor McDavid and Buffalo’s Tage Thompson were the other stars.
