Alex Ovechkin scored his first goal of the season and 731st career goal Wednesday, tying him with Marcel Dionne for fifth on the all-time NHL goals list. Later, he scored his 732nd goal to pass Dionne, and he did it short-handed. It was his first shorty since 2008 and the fifth of his career.

The first goal came on the power play, giving the Caps a 4-0 lead in the third period. Anthony Mantha and John Carlson assisted on the goal.

The Caps played a congratulatory message from Dionne during the break.

Up next on the all-time goal list is Brett Hull, who has 741 goals.

Ovi’s first goal was his 270th power play goal, who only trails Dave Andreychuk on the all-time power play goal list. Andreychuk has 274.
