For the ceremonial puck drop on Friday, Nationals pitcher Max Scherzer, who will be playing in the World Series next week, dropped a baseball – instead of a puck – between Alex Ovechkin and Rangers’s assistant captain Mika Zibanejad.
Scherzer slipped a bit before walking to center ice, holding a puck but then pulled out a baseball and dropped it.
The rest of the 2019 National League champion Washington Nationals were sitting in a sky suite enjoying the game.
